Shows | New and Upcoming Events & Shows Art @ Axis. Opening Reception Thurs. Sept. 24th 5:30-7:30
I am fortunate to have been given the opportunity to curate art into the new Axis high-rise in downtown San Jose. Axis is collaborating with (mostly) local artists to give them a place for their work to be seen by the public.
We will have a common reception for the artists, residents, and any art lover who would like to attend. We will be hosting an artist's fashion show, have tours of the penthouse, and will have more art, wine, and refreshments. I will send out more info in a press release to my mailing list soon.
Axis San Jose is located at:
38 N. Almaden Blvd. (no. of W. Santa Clara, behind the historic DeAnza Hotel)
San Jose, CA 95110
| Triton Museum of Art
(closed July 19th)
I am excited to announce that I have received the 2009 Arts Council Silicon Valley Fellowship Grant for Photography. I have been given a show of my work in the rotunda of the Triton Museum of Art along with sculptor Diana Pumpelly Bates.
The exhibition closes on Sunday, July 19th. I plan to spend from noon to 4:00 pm at the museum that day giving private tours and discussing the work. If you have not been to see the show you have a little bit of time before it closes.
The show is titled “Journeys” denoting the circuitous and interesting roads the grant recipients have travelled to get to this milestone on their personal artistic path. The public is welcome to attend and admission is free.
From the Arts Council press release:
“Arts Council Silicon Valley announced the recipients of the 2009 Artist Fellowship Grants for their groundbreaking contributions to the arts in Santa Clara County. May 08: Bonnafont Gallery, San Francisco
Peggy Gotthold and Larry Van Velzer from the fine book press Foolscap Press, asked me to print digital black and white prints to be tipped into their newest book "Despatches" by photo journalist and writer Michael Katakis. This a wonderful letterpress book with Michael's beautiful and sensitive photos, and moving stories from his travels in Africa, Greece and Morocco. The book and some full-sized photo prints of the images were on display at the Bonnafont Gallery, 946 A Greenwich St., San Francisco.
Some of the larger prints are silver gelatin and were printed by Michael in Sante Fe. I printed some of them and have had the interesting experience of diving into matte digital black and white printing. My thanks to everyone who gave me advice along the way as we all feel they have come out really well. It has been the magical combination of Michael's tremendous Leica photos, Epson's Ultrachrome K3 inks, and their wonderful Velvet Fine Art paper that really holds all the subtle details in the small prints in the book. The large prints feel almost like old etchings. Several people have said that the print of Michael's wife Kris looks like a Vermeer.
One of my “Graffiti on an Abandoned Train” photos was included in the show.

May 06- Pacific Art League’s “Photo/Sculpture” show
“Glass Brick - Dream Landscape” Winner- First Place. Juror Helen Golden's comments; "This imaginative and innovative photo stands out as both a personal and universal statement. The skillful composition works technically and the elements of color, line and pattern are in total harmony. The repeated and rhythmic curved forms create a mysterious mood and invite the viewer to ask questions about what is happening. It is a creative success because it manages to be emotionally satisfying at the same time that it is challenging and provocative. This is like the heartbeat of the image and that goes beyond technical competence as it gets to the essence of what a visual statement is about."
